    Pallet Racks in Chatham, IL

Chatham is about 10 miles south of our office, on the I-55 corridor between Springfield and St. Louis. Two kinds of jobs come out of here: new distribution space at the interstate interchange, and smaller businesses along the Route 4 corridor that need rack and shelving sized to their operation.

We plan both. Most start with selective pallet rack, because last-mile freight and small-business inventory both need every pallet reachable.

New Distribution at the I-55 Interchange

A 226,800 SF distribution warehouse was approved on light-industrial land at the southwest corner of the I-55 Chatham interchange, off Palm Road. Last-mile buildings move a lot of product fast, and the rack plan has to match the dock: short travel from receiving to rack, wide cross aisles and clear staging for outbound.

For case picking inside a distribution building, carton flow rack under a pallet level keeps pickers working at waist height.

    Cross Aisles and Dock Flow

In a last-mile building, travel time beats pallet count. Long rack runs with no breaks force drivers to circle around the end of every row. We add cross aisles every so many bays so trucks cut straight across, and we keep the area in front of the docks free for staging outbound loads.

Wire decking on pick levels holds partial pallets and loose cases, which last-mile operations generate constantly.

    Routes South Toward St. Louis

Chatham's spot on I-55 puts St. Louis about an hour and a half south and Springfield minutes north. That makes it a natural place for a building that restocks stores or delivers to homes in both directions. The storage plan should reflect which way most freight leaves.

Hot, humid summers make pick work harder in buildings without air conditioning. Placing the busiest pick zones near doors and fans helps.

Shelving and Rack for Route 4 Businesses

Industrial-zoned lots on Kemp Drive at the south end of town sit near the newly expanded Route 4 interchange. A local general warehousing and storage business operates in the Chatham Industrial Park on East Walnut Street. Shops like these often need a few rows of rack, a run of shelving and room to grow.

We do not oversize small jobs. A two-row layout gets the same care as a large building.

    • Light-duty rack for contractors and service businesses
    • Shelving for small parts and boxed stock
    • Room left for a second row later

Room to Expand on Kemp Drive

Businesses buying lots on Kemp Drive often build smaller first and add on later. We draw the rack for phase one with the expansion wall in mind, so new rows extend straight through when the building grows rather than starting a second, mismatched layout.

    Scheduling Installs Close to Home

Being 10 miles away keeps scheduling simple. In summer, crews start early in buildings without air conditioning; in winter, we watch the forecast so a snow day does not leave steel sitting on a truck. Moving from Springfield to Chatham? Our warehouse relocation service handles the rack.
