Pallet Racks for Decatur, IL Warehouses
Decatur sits about 40 miles east of our Springfield office on I-72, and a large share of its warehouse work runs through the Midwest Inland Port. The 280-acre intermodal ramp has Norfolk Southern access and on-site storage for more than 2,500 containers, so freight landing there gets unloaded, sorted and stored close by.
We plan selective pallet rack and drive-in rack for the 3PL, transload and food and ag processing buildings that cluster around a port like that. Every layout starts with your pallet list, your lift trucks and the clear height you really have.
Racking Around the Inland Port
Transload operators work with a pallet mix that shifts week to week. Selective rack keeps every position open, which matters when a container of mixed SKUs gets broken down and shipped out in pieces. Beams are sized to the heaviest load you expect, not the average.
Decatur Commerce Park on North 22nd Street is near the port and has rail available. Its existing divisible building runs 22-26 ft clear, while planned build-to-suit space is set at 32-40 ft clear. Those heights call for very different frames and beam levels, and we draw each building on its own terms.
Food, Ag and Cold Storage Racking
One of North America's largest ag-processing complexes is on Decatur's northeast side. Plants and suppliers store ingredients, packaging and finished goods in deep runs of one item. Drive-in rack fits that pattern: fewer aisles, more pallets per bay, and lot storage for product that ships in batches.
Local 3PLs also offer temperature-controlled storage, co-packing and hazmat warehousing. Cooler and freezer rooms need rack that handles low temperatures and condensation, and every aisle removed from a cold room is space you stop chilling. For dated product, pallet flow rack keeps rotation first in, first out.

Pallet Sizes Off the Container
Import freight rarely arrives on a clean 48 x 40. Containers unloaded at the ramp bring metric pallets, slip sheets and floor-loaded cartons that get palletized on site. Before we pick a beam length, we ask for a week of receiving data so frame depth and bay width match what really comes through the door.
Overhang is the quiet problem. A 42-inch-deep frame under a 48-inch load leaves three inches hanging front and back, which is fine. A 44-inch frame under the same load can leave a pallet balanced on its stringers. Small details like that decide whether a transload building runs smoothly.
Planning a Building on North Brush College Road
The shovel-ready North Brush College Road site can take up to 628,000 SF. It sits a half mile from the I-72 / Route 48 interchange and 1.5 miles from the port. If you are planning there, call before the column grid is final, because bay widths and column spacing should be settled together.
Decatur has toll-free access to I-72, I-55, I-74, I-57 and US-51, plus CN, Norfolk Southern and short-line rail. Freight can show up from any direction, so dock staging lanes go into the drawing from day one.
Moving Rack Into a Decatur Building
Companies moving closer to the port often bring their steel along. Our warehouse relocation service counts what you own, redraws it for the new clear height and reinstalls it. Snow and ice can slow winter deliveries, so January dates get extra slack.
