    Pallet Racks in Pana, IL

Pana sits about 45 miles southeast of Springfield, where Illinois Routes 16 and 29 meet US-51 downtown. Union Pacific's Pana Subdivision runs through the area. Most of the racking work here comes from small manufacturers and contractors.

We plan selective pallet rack and mezzanine-friendly layouts that fit modest buildings and leave room to grow.

The Bear Creek Road Industrial Park

The Pana Industrial Development Corporation's industrial park is on Bear Creek Road just off Route 29, northwest of town. It includes a 64,000 SF industrial building. A space that size can hold a manufacturer's raw material, work in process and finished goods if the storage plan is tight.

    Small Manufacturer Layout Basics

A small manufacturer usually needs three zones: raw material, work in process and finished goods. Raw material and finished goods go on selective rack. Work in process sits near the machines on carts or shelving. Keeping those zones separate keeps the floor clear.

Wire decking holds partial pallets and boxed components.

    Rail Through Town

Union Pacific's Pana Subdivision runs through the area. A business with rail access can bring in raw material in bulk, which needs staging space near the rail door before it goes into rack.

    Rack and Mezzanine Together

Small manufacturers often run short of floor before they run short of height. A mezzanine over a rack area or a work zone adds usable space for parts, packaging or offices. We plan rack rows and aisles so a mezzanine fits without moving them later.

Contractors need different storage: pallets of material, tools and long stock. Cantilever rack along one wall keeps conduit and pipe off the floor.

    • Rack rows laid out for a future mezzanine
    • Cantilever for contractor long stock
    • Shelving for tools and small parts

Making a 64,000 SF Building Work

The industrial building in the park offers 64,000 SF, which is plenty for a small manufacturer if storage is planned well. We start with the production area, then fit raw material and finished goods rack around it. Aisles connect production to docks in straight lines.

A mezzanine over the office or packing area can add more space without giving up rack positions.

We note column locations and dock doors on the first visit.

    Routes, Rail and Install Planning

With Routes 16 and 29 and US-51 meeting downtown, trucks reach Pana from every direction. We still watch winter forecasts closely, because a storm on Route 29 can delay a steel delivery.
