Pushback Rack in Springfield, IL
Pushback rack stores two to six pallets deep on nested carts, loaded and picked from a single aisle. Each lane holds one SKU. For food and beverage distributors and 3PLs carrying several pallets of the same item, it cuts aisles without giving up control of inventory.
That matters here because most Springfield buildings run 16-24 ft clear. When you cannot go higher, going deeper is the next move.
Density for Food, Beverage and 3PL Warehouses
Food and beverage distribution moves pallets of the same product in volume: cases of drinks, canned goods, snacks. A pushback lane three or four deep holds a SKU's full run behind one pick face. Compared with selective rack, the same floor area can hold noticeably more pallets.
3PLs use pushback for steady clients with deep SKUs, and keep selective rack for accounts that churn. A building split that way handles both without rework.

Where Pushback Fits in Springfield
On the north side near Sangamon Avenue and the I-55 / I-72 junction, newer distribution buildings handle beverage and grocery volume. At Airport Commerce Park on Route 4, smaller buildings use pushback to hold more in less space. Near the I-55 Chatham interchange, new distribution space is a natural fit for deep lanes.
Outside town, we plan pushback for 30-36 ft clear supplier buildings in Bloomington-Normal, 28 ft clear 3PL space in Morton and the Cummings Lane corridor in Washington.
Buffer Stock for Winter Weather
Snow and ice in central Illinois can delay inbound trucks for a day or more. Distributors who hold a little extra stock ride that out. Pushback makes buffer inventory cheaper to store because it takes fewer aisles to hold it.
Pushback also works well inside older buildings with tight column grids, where an extra row of selective rack will not fit but a deeper lane will. If you are moving to a new building, our warehouse relocation team can plan pushback into the new layout.
